Do Rally, Track, Drift and Race Cars Use Anti Lock Brake Systems (ABS)? – obp Tech Session

Hello Race Drivers all over the world.

Ok interesting situation has come up that I feel it is necessary to cover.

I have had an issue with a client that has a Drift car that is using a Hydraulic handbrake. The idea of the Hydraulic handbrake is so the driver can snap the back end and create a controllable drift.

He had a problem and could not lock the rear wheels. We asked him has he removed any valves or compensator systems that may be in the system? Has he looked at the brake schematics to make sure there were not systems preventing the cars wheels not to lock up? He told us he had removed all these systems and fitted new pipe work through out the car.

Ok at this point we were scratching our heads!! One of our technicians asked me has he removed the ABS, I could not remember asking a direct question on that, however we had discussed removing all systems that would prevent the wheels from locking.

So I asked him “Have you removed the ABS from the car”?

I am sure you can guess what he said “No he is still running the ABS”.

Ok now we have the solution to the problem.

The Antilock Brake System (ABS) is a fantastic development that was designed as most of the good safety systems in F1. However on Race Cars, Rally Cars, Drifting or Track Day Cars it is no good unless you have a very expensive system that has a very high pulse rate.

How can you disconnect the ABS?

Anti-lock brake systems save lives and should be maintained. However, Motorsport drivers often want to disable the system. For example, Rally competitions, Drifting events and sports driving are not suited to ABS controls. Skids and hard braking are overridden by ABS. This causes the brakes to pulse on and off and prevents the brakes from locking. Locking the brakes is the goal for most sports and competition driving events.

Here are three ways to disconnect the ABS:

  • Raise the bonnet of the car and open fuse box that contains the fuses and relays. Locate the ABS fuse and remove it. This will disable the anti-lock brakes without damaging any components. The brakes will function normally, but the anti-lock controls won’t.
  • Remove the main wiring connector that plugs into the anti-lock brake module. This module is located next to the brake master cylinder. Steel lines go from the master cylinder and are routed into the module. By disconnecting the wiring connector, you are disabling all the anti-lock brake functions.
  • Raise the car with a jack and place jack stands under the frame. Disconnect the anti-lock brake sensor on each wheel. This interrupts the sensor signal to the anti-lock brake system and effectively disables it.

This information is for race drivers and not to be used on the general high ways.

Please make sure that any modifications of this type are carried out by professional race preparation companies.

I hope this has been of interest to you.

Thank you for your time, all of us at obp Ltd look forward hearing from you soon.

Electric Race Car – obp Tech Session

Hello

Over the last couple of years obp have been approached by prototype race car specialist to manufacture race pedal boxes for the NEW BREED of electric powered race cars.

This email will give you bit of information about electric car racing and where to go and check it out.

Electric Vehicle Cup presents the world’s first ‘green’ motor racing series based totally around zero emission electric cars, providing the platform for sustainable motor sport.

If you’ve been impatiently waiting to watch electric cars rip racetrack asphalt asunder, an end to your suffering may be in sight.

A new racing series branded EV Cup has just been launched in London with plans to bring 3 separate classes of cars to a half-dozen tracks around Europe beginning in 2011.

City and Sports EV series would consist of mono-maker grids using production vehicles, though they would receive some race prep in the way of stripped-out cabins and juiced-up power-trains.

The Prototype EV division is more of a no-holds-barred
time-trial-style constructor vs constructor affair with no weight or power restrictions and front, rear or all-wheel-drive configurations accepted.

The organization already has automakers lining up to get involved.

According to the EV Cup website Th!nk would provide the first field in the City EV category (with the more-appropriately-named than ever Th!nk City), while both Ginetta and the Lightning Car Company are eying a Sports EV series.

Meanwhile in the Prototype EV division, the GreenGT team is registered and ready to rumble, so to speak, with their
single-seat racer they say can hit 60 mph in under 4 seconds on the way up to its top speed of 170 mph.

Experience the ultimate electric vehicles,
leveraging their instant torque provided by electric motors and cutting-edge battery technologies, as they compete in the racing cup at the most challenging circuits.

City EV THINK

This class is limited to city focused, production vehicles that can be seen in use today. Consisting of single-make races, the CityEV class will feature THINK City vehicles that have been prepared to a race specification. In addition to the modified and lightened interior and exterior changes, the vehicle will be running on the latest THINK prepared motor and battery technologies.

Sports EV

Westfield iRACER

This class is reserved for race drivers of all abilities experienced in open cockpit race competitions. Based on a bespoke race car developed for the EV Cup race series by Westfield Sportscars, the iRACER is a pure race bred vehicle made for sprint racing. Equipped with a boost button
allowing for a surge of energy when executing overtaking manoeuvres, race strategy will play a key role towards victory on the track.

Prototype EV

The PrototypeEV class follows a time-trial format allowing for the demonstration of the latest non-production electric vehicles to set competitive lap-times on the most challenging circuits. With little design limitations and no
weight or power limits, this class offers an exciting showcase for
electric vehicles.

2011 RACING CUP

The 2011 race season will feature six weekends in Europe with the opportunity to also race in the USA. Following the excitement and competitive morning qualifying, races consist of a single-make sprint race over 20—30 minutes of competitive laps. Race teams and drivers will be housed in pit garages and provided with media exposure and hospitality throughout the day. The day will finish with a winner’s podium and press conference.
